Boston Medical Center is a non-profit academic hospital in the South End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. It has 514 beds and provides primary and specialty care. The hospital is the main teaching hospital for Boston University's medical school and runs the busiest trauma and emergency center in New England. It also operates the 11th busiest emergency department in the United States.
Boston Medical Center was formed in 1996 through a merger of two hospitals. One of them, Boston City Hospital, opened in 1864 as the first municipal hospital in the United States. The center operates as a non-profit within the Boston Medical Center Health System and employs more than 3,800 staff. A hospital opened long ago to serve the public still carries that same mission forward today.1
