DJO started in 1978 as DonJoy, founded by Mark Nordquist and Ken Reed in a garage in Carlsbad, California. Smith & Nephew bought the company in 1987. Managers bought it back in 1999. Blackstone Group purchased DJO for $1.6 billion in 2007. Colfax Corporation acquired DJO in 2019. As of 2017, DJO had about 5,200 employees and $1.19 billion in revenue. Changing owners four times shows how much investors want to own medical device makers.1
