Genesys makes AI-powered software that helps companies manage customer service conversations across phone, chat and other channels. Its main product, Genesys Cloud CX, includes agentic AI, virtual agents and copilots. The company is based in Menlo Park, California, and says its software handles more than 7 billion conversations each quarter for over 8,000 customers in more than 100 countries.

Gregory Shenkman and Alec Miloslavsky founded Genesys in 1990 with $150,000 borrowed from their families. Genesys went public on NASDAQ in 1997, was bought by Alcatel-Lucent for $1.5 billion in 1999, and was bought again by Permira and Technology Crossover Ventures in 2012. It has since bought other companies, including Interactive Intelligence for $1.4 billion in 2016. Genesys is now private, with more than 6,000 employees as of 2023. That matters: after two big buyouts, Genesys answers to private equity owners, not public shareholders. Historically, the median salary is ~$173,650. Genesys is an H-1B sponsor.1
