Loral Space & Communications and Qualcomm created Globalstar as a joint venture on March 24, 1991. In April 2026, Amazon announced a deal to buy Globalstar for $11.57 billion, with the purchase expected to close in 2027. If it goes through, one of the biggest names in online shopping and cloud computing would own a satellite network built for emergency messaging and remote tracking, not for retail.
