Globalstar provides satellite and ground-based communication services around the world. Its satellite IoT devices track and monitor equipment and cargo from remote locations. SPOT Satellite Messengers let hikers, workers, and others send an emergency SOS signal when they have no cell phone signal. Its Industrial IoT Asset Tracking service shows the location of vehicles and equipment on a map in near real time. Globalstar is based in Covington, Louisiana.
Loral Space & Communications and Qualcomm created Globalstar as a joint venture on March 24, 1991. In April 2026, Amazon announced a deal to buy Globalstar for $11.57 billion, with the purchase expected to close in 2027. If it goes through, one of the biggest names in online shopping and cloud computing would own a satellite network built for emergency messaging and remote tracking, not for retail. Globalstar is an H-1B sponsor.1
