Johnson Controls was founded in 1885 in Whitewater, Wisconsin, as the Johnson Electric Service Company, started by Warren S. Johnson and a group of Milwaukee investors. It is a public company, traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker JCI. In 2016, it merged with Tyco International to form Johnson Controls International. In 2019, it sold its Power Solutions division, which later became Clarios. In 2025, the company had about 87,000 employees and $23.6 billion in revenue. That matters: after selling its battery business and merging with Tyco, Johnson Controls now focuses on buildings, not batteries.
