General information

Merck & Company is a biopharmaceutical company that makes medicines, vaccines, and animal health products. Its products include the cancer drug Keytruda, the HPV vaccine Gardasil, and the investigational cancer therapy Intismeran autogene. Merck is based in Rahway, United States.

Merck started as a US subsidiary in 1891 and became independent in 1917, founded by Theodore Weicker and George Merck. The US government nationalized it in 1917 over its German ties, and it merged with Sharp & Dohme in 1953. It bought Schering-Plough for $41 billion in 2009. Merck is public, trading on the NYSE under ticker MRK. It has about 75,000 employees and made $65.01 billion in revenue in 2025; Keytruda alone brought in $29.5 billion in 2024. That matters: Keytruda's sales give Merck the cash to keep funding new drug research.

Currently, there's a total of 897 job openings at Merck & Company. Over the last 30 days, 939 jobs were added and 1,988 were removed (job postings usually stay up ~11 days before being removed). Historically, the median salary is ~$249,850. Merck & Company is a top-tier H-1B sponsor.1
