MetLife is a global insurance and financial services company. It sells life insurance, annuities, disability coverage and employee benefits to individuals and businesses. Its products include term, universal and variable universal life insurance, plus health coverage such as dental, vision and pet insurance. MetLife is based in New York, United States.
MetLife was established on March 24, 1868, as the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company. For most of its history it was a mutual company, owned by its policyholders, until it converted to a public company through an IPO in 2000. It trades on the NYSE under the ticker MET and is part of the S&P 500. As of 2025 it employed about 46,000 people. That mutual-to-public shift matters: MetLife spent most of its history answering to policyholders, only switching to shareholders in 2000.
