F. Patrick Sher, Stephen Dougherty, and Jack Kopkin started the company in 1986 in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. It went public in 1988, then merged with OfficeMax in 2013. In December 2025, Atlas Holdings bought the company and took it private again. As of 2024, Office Depot ran 869 stores, employed about 19,000 people, and made $6.99 billion in revenue. The company now answers to a single private owner instead of public shareholders.
