OpenAI was founded on December 8, 2015, by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, and others. Microsoft invested $1 billion in 2019, and OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022. In 2025, OpenAI restructured into a public benefit corporation: the OpenAI Foundation holds 26%, Microsoft holds 27%, and employees and other investors hold the rest. It had about 4,500 employees and annualized revenue of $13.1 billion as of 2026. That matters: Microsoft's stake ties OpenAI's products closely to Microsoft's cloud business.
