The company was founded in 1981, when Jamaican entrepreneur Gordon 'Butch' Stewart bought an old hotel and opened it as Sandals Montego Bay. As of 2025 it operates 17 resorts with 10,000+ employees across Sandals and Beaches combined. Adam Stewart has led the company as Executive Chairman since his father's death in January 2021, so leadership has stayed in the family.¹
