General information

The Standard provides insurance and financial products for workplace benefits in the United States. It sells life and disability insurance, both short-term and long-term. It offers retirement plans and stable value funds for retirement savings. The Standard also provides dental, vision, and accident coverage, plus paid family and medical leave benefits for employees.

The company was founded in 1906 as the Oregon Life Insurance Company. Since 2016 it has been part of StanCorp Financial Group, owned by the Japanese insurer Meiji Yasuda Life. That ownership gives The Standard backing from one of Japan's large insurance groups. The company employs about 5,186 people and manages about $74.89 billion in assets under administration.
