Tyndall National Institute

Tyndall National Institute is a semiconductor research institute in integrated ICT hardware and systems, covering both electronics and photonics technologies. Its compound semiconductors group works on epitaxy and photonics materials and devices. Its health and wellbeing research covers biophotonics, bioelectronics and wearables. It also develops quantum photonics and electronic devices.

Tyndall traces its roots to 1979, when a silicon wafer-fabrication laboratory was established. It now operates in Cork, Ireland, as a research flagship of University College Cork, in the historic Lee Maltings complex. Its research community comprises over 600 people of 52 nationalities, including more than 500 researchers, engineers and professional staff, plus around 120 full-time postgraduate students. The institute produces approximately 250 peer-reviewed publications a year and secured over €8m in European funding through the Horizon 2020 programme.¹
