Veriff

Veriff is a global identity verification company based in Tallinn, Estonia. It helps online businesses combat fraud and meet regulatory requirements. Its platform uses facial recognition that compares points on a person's face and checks images against government databases. Device fingerprinting analyzes network and device data to spot fraud, and NFC technology reads biometric data straight from document chips.

Kaarel Kotkas and Janer Gorohhov founded Veriff in 2015. The company graduated from Y Combinator in 2018 and was named Estonian startup of the year. In 2019 it acquired BrowserID, an Estonian device-based fraud detection company, to add more fraud checks. By 2021 Veriff had 248 employees and reached unicorn status with a $1.3 billion valuation. That scale shows how much online businesses now pay to prove a user is a real person, not a bot or a stolen identity.
