W Hotels started in 1998, when the first W New York hotel opened. Barry Sternlicht, then CEO of Starwood Hotels, created the brand. Marriott International has owned W Hotels since it bought Starwood Hotels in 2016. So a brand Starwood built from the ground up now belongs to Marriott, the company that bought Starwood out.
