The company started as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in January 2009. It was renamed and spun out as Waymo in December 2016, and it's now a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google's parent company. Waymo has given over 20 million rides, with a 93% rider satisfaction rate. As of 2025 it runs 3,871 robotaxis, handles 500,000 paid rides a week, and has logged 200 million fully autonomous miles.
